Foleytown is a special place...a place where there is always a shortage of money but never a shortage of laughs. Follow the children of the large, financially struggling Foley clan as they navigate through "bloody" pomegranate fights, epic games of Christmas Card War, homemade bridesmaid dresses, fears of itinerant serial killers, and the cherished summer tradition they called "Prune-Why-Oh" - all while learning how to grow up in a very unfashionable part of California.

I found this book, as the author hoped it would be, entertaining, humorous and with warmth embedded in its pages. It depicts, briefly, her early childhood in the Inland Empire, southern California, before subsequently moving, at the age of five, to Ulloa City in the northern part of California. The move was made because her father’s employer, the USAF, now reallocated to that locality. Unfortunately, because of epilepsy affecting the father his job had to be changed to a clerical position, reducing his pay by a third; with seven children the reduction was crippling, but the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the family shines through in the book. Read about it; read of the improvised games played by the author and her siblings and how the father, mother and offspring’s, as poor as the proverbial church mouse, refused charity, overcame poverty in the daily challenges in their lives and of how the children growing into teenage and with the aid of the “Jesuit connection” attended college - attending college, the father thought, would never be for the likes of us. An enjoyable read. Recommended.Product details

Foleytown S K Cole 9781524603120 Books Reviews
This charming, whimsical set of short stories brings back memories of my childhood, not so long ago when we played outdoors and created our own games and fun times. Susan writes with clever phrases and tantalizing vocabulary words. I enjoyed her sense of humor and repetitive stye; printing out her parents' full names at each reference. A fun read!
These stories are charming, well-paced, and exhibit the author's craft very nicely. The universal appeal of the folks-ey tales appealed to me, struck a familiar chord, and caused me to yearn for simpler times. I hope that S.K. Cole plans another publication soon.
I really appreciate all the details in this series of charming vignettes documenting and illustrating life growing up in central California in the 1960s and 1970s. I have read other memoirs of impoverished and unconventional families in the south and southwest, it is nice to read one about California. Books such as these are an important way to document our past and help our kids learn about where we came from and therefore better understand us. The author clearly recognizes this in her dedication to her younger family members.
