The two kinds of magic have always been totally separate. Until now.

Vatar risked his life to try to save his friend--and failed. Now he has an implacable enemy in the shaman, who blames Vatar for the death of his only son. He’s forced to flee his home, at least until the shaman’s thirst for revenge cools.
Taking shelter with his mother’s people in one of the coastal cities, Vatar learns more than he bargained for. He agreed to learn to work iron and steel, but he never suspected to find a magical heritage as well.
And that’s a problem. A huge problem. Because unlike their own Spirit magic, his people regard the city magic as the work of Evil Spirits. If the shaman ever found out about this, it could be the weapon he needs to destroy Vatar.
And yet, finding a way to accept the other side of his heritage may be the only way Vatar can ultimately defeat his enemy and win more than his freedom.

The Shaman Curse Dual Magics Book 1 eBook Meredith Mansfield

I downloaded this book with Amazon unlimited thinking I would read it one of many flights. For some reason I didn't open it for a few weeks until yesterday. I spent Sunday reading and enjoying the book and was surprised by how much I enjoyed the book. The book follows the often seen (young hero, unique history, unique power, denial, acceptance, success) formula but is unique. The young hero is smarter than most, makes human but not stupid mistakes, is loved by many hated by few, recognizes that making enemies is not a long term path to success. More important the expected relationships that come from learning his background are completely different than expected. I rated this book a 5 because of my enjoyment of it, exclusive to comparisons to others. Have I read deeper more technical books? Yes. Have I read more complex characters and better world building? Yes.

Did I absolutely love reading this book on a lazy Sunday? Yes.

The Shaman Curse Dual Magics Book 1 eBook Meredith Mansfield Reviews

This is a good book. I really enjoyed it. I will definitely read the next book. I can't wait to see what happens. I have even preordered the 4th book.
It's always a relief to have characters who aren't stupid, overly naive, or inane. This is a character driven story where the characters mature and overcome reasonable challenges without being dark fantasy. I didn't think there were any Mary Sues here. I am ana adult and I enjoyed this book. Although the themes aren't complex, the writing is nicely done.
It's a wonderful world to get lost in. I must get the next book. The fear of magic the acceptance and learning. It is a journey I enjoyed.
Strong character development and an interesting world. I enjoyed the story even if the action was rather slow paced. The main character grows on you.

The tribe's vengeful shaman blames Vatar for the death of his only son, which drives most of the plot line elements. Vatar is sent away from his home and gains training from others. It's a sort of coming of age tale. I will buy the next book.

I liked the cover art.
I really enjoyed this book. After I finished it naturally I went to the author's blog to find out if the next one was coming out sooner than indicated at the back of the book. I think I'm a little too early to hope. But I did appreciate the extra at the end.

I liked the main character. The book was a decently long read for me (I read fast!), well paced and it actually felt fleshed out. Vatar is just becoming a man in the eyes of the world and I really do think he progressed from the beginning to the end. I think he dealt with everything that came up really well. The book has good description it could maybe use a little more but I would rather this than attempt to slog through 5 pages about a chair or something... In any case it didn't leave me lost which I appreciate.

The magic aspect is something I definitely look forward to seeing developed more. Editing in this was great. I'm going to be looking for more for read by Meredith Mansfield. )
Really wonderful story family, friends, strength, pride, love, and all the other thing needed for a nice story. It maintained my interest the entire time. The family life and later discovering who his real father was along with several sisters and brothers as well
Had a wonderful plot of adventure and as Vatar later learned to distinguish the difference between lust and love. I loved the fact that he never let anything stop him from moving forward in life even though there was the fear. Look forward to book 2 of this wonderful story.
This book is a wonderful jaunt into a culturally diverse world with a lot of potential. The world building in this story is good but not great don’t expect the in-depth descriptions that you get with authors like Jordan or Tolkien but there is enough description that you still form a good picture though. This is especially true in the descriptions of the cultures that you come across while following the adventure of Vatar (our protagonist). This story is more character/action driven and while there is not much venturing down the rabbit hole with many of the other characters besides Vatar it does not stop you from feeling like you at least get to know them a bit and be able to care about and humanize them.
The magic system in this world is unique not 100% original but what is in modern fantasy writing; point is that it is not the standard hocus pocus one comes to expect. It is a very interesting mix of traditional, druidic, & shamanistic magic styles there is just not a lot of it that is described well although the parts of the magic that the author does give explanations for are satisfactory.
Over all, this book was a page-turner for me and I read it through in one go. The characters were easy to like; there is one review posted here that complains about the women in this book being treated like “whiny things” and discourages other women from reading the book, this is not the case except for the one female character that is portrayed this way Avaza; which seemed to be the whole point of that character to me at least, she was a plot device to help Vatar figure out what he does not want. The rest of the women I this story I felt were written as strong, confident and independent. I happily recommend this book to any fantasy fans and am looking forward to the next installment. One last kudos, to the author, for an independently published work the editing is very good not perfect but so much better than many other works in the same category.
